Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20) for the best balance of flavor and juiciness
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs helps bind the patties
  • 1 egg for binding
  • 1/2 cup onion finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter for greasing the baking dish
  • 1 cup beef broth for making the sauce
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream adds richness to the sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with water to thicken the sauce

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  • Form the mixture into thick patties and set aside.
  • Grease a baking dish with butter and arrange the hamburger patties inside.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, whisk together beef broth and heavy cream. Bring to a simmer.
  • Mix cornstarch with a small amount of water and stir it into the broth mixture to thicken the sauce.
  • Pour the sauce over the hamburger patties in the baking dish.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.

Notes

For extra flavor, add mushrooms or shredded cheese to the sauce. Serve with crusty bread to soak up the delicious gravy.
